Heirloom Hens
My heirloom hens are based on an antique pottery rooster that has been in my family for at least 80 years. Mr. Rooster, throughout my childhood and to this day, has been locked away in a glass fronted cabinet, only to come out at Easter and special occasions. As a child, I have strong memories of the cabinet being unlocked on those special days and Mr Rooster being brought out for inspection. My mum or dad would be in charge of holding him, but the children would be allowed to take turns to lift off the head to reveal the glistening foil wrapped eggs inside. It was a magical moment. If we were very lucky we would be trusted to hold Mr. Rooster. This is a treasured childhood memory and one that I thought would be lovely to share with others, and so the Heirloom Hen was born.

Design
Each hen is approximately 16cm high and 10cm wide. They are made from slip decorated stoneware and are finished in a clear shiny glaze. They each have a name and edition number. The name is inscribed beneath the tail feathers and you are welcome to commission your own hen and give it a name of your choice. Hens are sold in their own box filled with a recycled paper straw nest. They come with chocolate mini eggs and have a few snail snacks (not real) thrown into the box to keep them fed as they wing their way to your home. If you are fortunate you may also find a lucky feather in the nest. Boxes are tied with raffia and each has a tag with your hen's name and edition number.
